Castle Attack

Dear Lord,

We knights understand that your home is your castle.  The most important thing you can do to protect it is to follow our recommendations.  We will do our best to protect the castle of Oakus Parkus. A castle, built to our specifications, is the greatest source of protection for you, your family and your land.  Although the castle is the best form of defense, there will still be attempts to destroy it. The current situation of the castle is relatively quiet and peaceful. Enemies will try to capture the land and doing so, they will attack your castle. The enemy will usually give notice of their attack to allow time for surrendering. But instead of surrendering, you can use this time to get your knights prepared for battle. L

As you know, since you control the land and your knights who defend it are based in the castle, the castle would be a target of attack by the enemy.  A typical method of attack would occur when the enemy would place it under siege and surround the castle.  The attackers would surround the castle with both men and catapults so that no one could enter or leave the castle. Another method of attack that they could possibly use is to besiege the castle. This method would require the enemy to wait and starve the castle into surrendering. Besieging would cut off the food supply and could last up to a year. We knights will make sure that the castle is properly stocked with food and water in case the enemy decides to use this method.
They will also use some destructive weapons to ruin your castle. They can use lance spears, longbow and arrow, mace, dagger, battle-axe, crossbow and arrow, sword, and scabbard. They will attack your castle by horseback and swords. They will have a direct attack on you and the people in the castle. The castle’s current situation is very peaceful and quiet at the moment, and we knights will do our best to keep it that way for a long time. The last method that the enemy would use is to totally ignore the castle. They would ignore the castle and take the lands around it.  S

Because the weakest part of the castle is typically the entrance, this would be a prime spot for attack.  Weapons the attackers might use include stone ball weights, catapults, crossbows and battering rams.

A well-built, well-defended castle, however, would be able to thwart or withstand a siege.  To protect against a long siege and blockade, the castle should have storage facilities for stockpiles of food and wells or reservoirs for water.  To protect the entrance, a moat should be built around the castle.  Enemy soldiers would be afraid to cross it and those who would attempt to cross would make easy targets for your knights in the guard towers on either side of the entrance. C

In addition, to very thick walls that can withstand much of an attack, there would be narrow windows called loopholes in the walls.  Your knights would be relatively safe behind the walls but could aim arrows through the loopholes down at any oncoming attackers.  The castle walls should also be very high to prevent the attackers from climbing over. If the enemy put ladders against the castle walls to try to climb inside, your defenders could drop rocks or firepots filled with burning tar or scalding water or oil on them. L

If any of the attackers managed to get inside the castle, they would then have to face another obstacle.  Murder holes would enable your defenders to fire missiles or pour down hot liquids at them.  Your knights could also fire at the attackers from behind the safety of brick or stone bartizans or lookout perches.   Any remaining attackers would surely be defeated by your well-trained, trustworthy knights.  With all of these levels of defense in your castle, you can rest easily in the safety and comfort of your home. S

The Knights would the surround the castle. Only the strongest people should help defend. You should send out the weak people out like old people, sick people, children, and the women. This way the food would not be wasted and it would help the strongest people. The front entrance is the weakest point so gather the strongest knights by the gatehouse so if they break through, the knights will attack. Gather lots of food as the enemy may besiege you. Bring in livestock for fresh meat. Foods like cheese,
beans, oats, malt and barley for beer, wine, bread, eels, venison, herrings, rice, and figs. Other non-food supplies would include horses and harnesses, hauberks, suits of mail, crossbows, cables, cords, coal, arrows, bolts, iron, and lead. The main storage for the foods and supply would be in the dungeon. The dungeon would be a perfect place for storage because its sturdy and it would keep enemy out, as it needs a key to get access to it. To build a sturdy defense you need sturdy walls like an outer and inner wall. That will help protect against battering rams and trebuchets. C

                                                               Drawbridges and Walls

Lord, many drawbridges were made of wood including ours. Early drawbridges were removable when needed which gives us more protection. Lord, our drawbridge has a pulley system so then the guards will pull on the ropes to lift up the wooden bridge so anyone who needed to cross the moat can. In later years ropes were replaced with chain because they would last longer and had much more strength. And Lord, our chains were replaced many years ago so we are safe. There was even an invention of the counter weight, so our guard's jobs easer.        L

The walls were eight feet of a foot thick. These will help prevent the enemy from getting in easily. Hopefully, the walls will help lessen the damage from the catapults. Catapults are mechanisms that the enemy will use. Catapults are a mechanism that throw stones, fires and other weapons. We are reinforcing the ceilings and walls as we speak so there is of no concern with you for now. The drawbridge is unbreakable with steel to help withstand battering rams. To prevent tunneling, we have anti-tunnels with men inside ready to fight. The floors of the castle are thicker to prevent a collapse with the anti-tunneling. If that fails, which is unlikely, the moat will prevent tunneling. To ensure that, we will make the moat deeper.  S

Conclusion

Lord, please follow our advice to defend your castle so the enemy does not burn down your grand castle. If you follow our advice, your castle will remain a secure and peaceful castle. Thank you for considering our plan to defend. We hope you be safe in this castle with the stuff that we have told you. C
